Lawyers predict trial for house church pastor

The lawyers for Yang Hua, an incarcerated house church pastor, suspect that the trial for their client will occur soon. Yang is accused of divulging state secrets and is currently detained in China’s central Guizhou province.

Yang pastors Huoshi Church, the largest house church in Guiyang, Guizhou. On Dec. 9, 2015, officials took him into custody for resisting the confiscation of a church hard drive. The next day, he was given two consecutive five-day sentences for “obstructing justice” and “gathering a crowd to disturb public order.” At the end of this period however, he was transferred to criminal detention for “illegally possessing state secrets” and officially arrested on Jan. 22, 2016, for “divulging state secrets.”

Through a series of visitations, his lawyers Zhao Yonglin and Chen Jiangang learned that the prosecutors assigned to his case had used to torture to extract a confession.

On Aug. 5, Zhao ascertained that the court received video footage submitted by the Nanming District Procuratorate as evidence, triggering suspicions that the trial will be held soon.
