Christian refused cancer surgery treated abroad

After a long history of abuse from the Chinese government for her defense of human rights, a Christian woman sought cancer treatments abroad when Chinese hospitals refused to treat her.

Huang Yan, a 49-year-old pro-democracy dissident who has assisted many prisoners of conscience, was recently discharged from the hospital despite needing a crucial surgery. Her physicians agreed on the necessity of an operation, since she suffers from advanced cancer, diabetes, and other threatening diseases. However, the day before the surgery, the hospital suddenly refused to perform it and discharged her.

Seeing travelling outside of China for treatment as Huang’s only option, China Aid started an emergency fund to help her cover the cost. Thanks to generous contributions, not only was Huang’s treatments and travel fully paid for, but she has been able to successfully undergo her treatments.

Her surgery passed without incident, and after inspecting her biopsies, her doctors concluded that her cancer has not spread further and believe she will not need chemotherapy.

Huang is currently resting as her doctors continue following up on her recovery. She and her husband will likely apply for political asylum to avoid returning to China.
